'''War Residues: Repurposed Objects and Memories of a Global War along the Highland Naga–Myanmar Border''' is a research project that examines how World War II is remembered and experienced through material objects and oral histories in communities along the Naga–Myanmar border. Led by Dr Aditya Kiran Kakati, the project explores how wartime remnants such as aircraft parts, military equipment, ammunition, and other artefacts were repurposed into everyday objects, creating enduring connections between global conflict and local memory.

The project investigates how Naga communities remember the war through lived experiences, family histories, and material culture, offering perspectives that challenge dominant military and Western-centred narratives of World War II. By documenting these memories before they disappear, the project contributes to a more inclusive understanding of the war and its long-term impact on borderland communities.

'''Project Information'''

'''Project Lead:''' Dr Aditya Kiran Kakati

'''Duration:''' January 2026 – December 2026

'''Funder:''' Delta on the Move Foundation Limited (Small Grants Scheme)

'''Lead Institution:''' The Highland Institute

'''Status:''' Ongoing

'''Project Overview'''

During and after World War II, communities across the Naga Hills and the Naga–Myanmar border encountered significant quantities of military material left behind by Allied and Japanese forces. Many of these objects were repurposed for domestic, agricultural, and community use, becoming embedded within everyday life and local memory.

The project examines these objects not only as material remnants of war but also as carriers of memory, identity, and historical knowledge. Through ethnographic fieldwork and oral history research, the study documents community narratives surrounding wartime experiences, survival strategies, and the continuing significance of war-related objects.

'''Objectives'''

* Document and preserve oral histories related to World War II in Naga borderland communities.
* Record and analyse wartime objects that have been repurposed for everyday use.
* Explore local memories and interpretations of World War II.
* Contribute to more inclusive and community-centred histories of the war.
* Preserve historical knowledge that is at risk of being lost as eyewitness generations disappear.

'''Research Themes'''

* Memory Studies
* Material Culture
* Oral History
* Borderland Studies
* World War II
* Heritage and Archives
* Indigenous Histories
* Environmental Humanities

'''Activities'''

* Ethnographic fieldwork in communities along the Naga–Myanmar border.
* Collection of oral histories and life narratives.
* Documentation and photography of wartime artefacts.
* Archival and historical     research.
* Community consultations and knowledge-sharing activities.
* Production of research and public engagement materials.

'''Expected Outcomes'''

The project will create an important archive of oral histories and material heritage related to World War II in the Naga borderlands. By documenting wartime objects and community memories before they are lost, the research will contribute to preserving local historical knowledge for future generations.

Expected outputs include an illustrated booklet, a public workshop and book launch, academic publications, and research materials that highlight local perspectives on the war. The project aims to broaden understandings of World War II by foregrounding community experiences, agency, and resourcefulness within a globally significant historical event.
