Editorial Principles
Principles guiding how material is selected, represented and connected on Ekologos Wiki.
Ekologos Wiki is a curated knowledge platform. Material is selected and presented in ways that keep knowledge connected to the people, places, projects and circumstances through which it was produced. The following principles guide how records are written, reviewed and connected.
Situated Rather Than Generic
Knowledge should be presented in its particular context. Where possible, records should identify the relevant place, community, project, period and circumstances rather than presenting information as universally applicable.
Relational Rather Than Encyclopedic
The Wiki is not intended to reproduce a general encyclopedia. Records should show relationships between people, places, projects, themes, publications, films and other materials.
Provenance Before Authority
It is important to show where knowledge comes from. Records should identify, where possible, who contributed the information, how it was produced or documented, and the sources on which it is based.
Curated Openness
Ekologos Wiki supports access to and sharing of knowledge, but material is reviewed before publication. Openness does not mean that every contribution or every form of knowledge should automatically be made public.
Attribution
Authors, researchers, contributors, knowledge holders, photographers, filmmakers, communities and other sources should be acknowledged appropriately.
Respect for Community Knowledge
Community-derived knowledge should be represented with care. It should not be separated from its context, attributed incorrectly, or shared in ways that disregard permissions, restrictions or community concerns.
Research Interpretation and Community Statements
The Wiki should clearly distinguish between what people or communities report, describe or explain and how researchers interpret or analyse that material. Research interpretation should not be presented as though it were the direct statement of a community or participant.
Together, these principles are intended to support careful representation of context, provenance, attribution and community knowledge across Ekologos Wiki.
