Overview

The Urbaltour Kohima project was a research initiative conducted between 2022 and 2025 by a collective team from the French Institute of Pondicherry and the Highland Institute. It analyzed the relationship between urban growth and tourism in mountainous regions, specifically focusing on Kohima, Nagaland.

◎

Objectives

The primary objective was to fill a research gap regarding small and medium-sized mountain cities, which are often under-studied compared to metropolitan areas. Specific goals regarding Kohima as a case study included: 1. Mapping Tourism Growth: Identifying the development patterns of tourism within Kohima and its surrounding areas. 2. Understanding Challenges: Analyzing the social tensions, sustainability issues (such as water, waste, and traffic), and inequalities resulting from tourism-led urbanization. 3. Informing Policy: Contributing to a healthy public debate about the future of tourism and urbanization for the city's citizens at a critical time in its development.

Outcomes

By analyzing tourist demographics, hospitality trends, and artisan economics, the project concludes that while the Hornbill Festival and nature-based activities drive a burgeoning, entrepreneur-led tourism sector, sustained growth is currently hampered by infrastructure gaps, spatial imbalances in accommodation, and a lack of visitor information outside the peak festival period
