The Highland Institute (THI), based in Kohima, Nagaland, India, is an independent interdisciplinary research centre and a key partner institution within the Ekologos Project. Through collaborative research, education, and public engagement, the Institute contributes to the development of environmental humanities, social science, and community-based research across Northeast India and beyond. The Institute also publishes the Highlander Journal, a platform for scholarly and public-facing research on the Himalayan and Highland regions.

Established as an independent research organisation, THI works closely with academic institutions, governmental agencies, and civil society organisations in India and internationally to design and implement long-term field-based research. Research findings are disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, academic conferences, policy dialogues, public engagement initiatives, and multimedia outputs. Supported by an international network of research fellows and collaborators, the Institute facilitates collaborative research projects, scholarly exchanges, postgraduate training programmes, and community-engaged initiatives.

Education and Capacity Building

The Highland Institute supports research training and postgraduate education through fellowships, internships, workshops, Winter Schools, and its annual Summer School programme. These initiatives provide opportunities for students, early-career researchers, and professionals to develop skills in interdisciplinary research, critical thinking, ethnographic methods, academic writing, and data analysis.

The Institute's School of Advanced Studies, Summer School, serves as a flagship training programme, bringing together participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds for intensive training in research design, fieldwork methods, research ethics, and knowledge production.
